Polar Bears Warming Up to Climate Change Essay

The way the earth’s atmosphere has been changing is an interesting issue among researchers today.â Some trust it to be brought about by the earth’s regular geothermal turn of events and part of the ordinary change that the planet ought to experience. Others repudiate these cases by saying that man’s own creations and ill-advised utilization of non-renewable energy sources has been disturbing the normal warm changes.â Environmentalists further inclination the overall population to act towards helping safeguard earth in light of the fact that man’s exercises are decreasing human endurance as well as of his co-planetary habitants too. Polar Bears’ Hierarchy in the Arctic Kingdom  â â â â â â â â â â Polar bears are known to be the world’s biggest land predator. (Briggs, 2003, standard. 9) Adult females ordinarily gauge 330 to 550 pounds however guys can be as substantial as 775 to 1500 pounds. (Polar Bears International, 2008, standard. 4)  â â â â â â â â â â Polar bears, as can be appeared in the Food Chain Model underneath, are on the natural way of life in the cold areas and feed on ringed seals and walruses. Polar Bear Beluga  â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â Ringed Sealâ â â â â â â â â Thick-Billed Murresâ â â â â â â â â â â â â â Walrus Bowheaded Whaleâ â â â â â â â â â â â â â â Arctic Codâ â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â Arctic Tern Zooplankton Source: Assignment Discovery School Lesson Plan, p. 3 Phytoplankton  â â â â â â â â â â Although people have willingly volunteered to think about their condition, sharing duty isn't in every case simple. There used to be worries among Norway and Russia, with regards to who ought to be liable for the consideration of the Ursus maritimus or polar bear since they can be found in both countries.â An examination made by Mette Mauritzen (2002) and her associates utilized satellite telemetry to acquire information from 105 female polar bears over twelve of years and the outcomes demonstrated that the various subpopulations in the various areas are all piece of one ceaseless polar bear population.â This implies the two nations need to share the executives duty regarding the species. A dangerous atmospheric devation and the Arctic  â â â â â â â â â â Many researchers are stating that the ebb and flow condition of an unnatural weather change is too fast.â Some state that it will just take around 50 years before the ice in the Arctic will soften while others state it might take around 100 years.â The time allotment is insignificant on the grounds that the earnestness of fighting an Earth-wide temperature boost can genuinely be seen with its anticipated and as of now on-going impacts. As indicated by NASA Engineer Josefino C. Comiso (2003), his satellite perceptions show that the multi year pattern in situ surface temperature is multiple times bigger than the multi year pattern which implies that the ocean is warming a lot quicker than typical. He additionally presumes that constantly 2050, the ice lying over the mainland rack would be dislodged into the polar bowl. Polar Bears and Global Warming  â â â â â â â â â â According to an article composed by Eric Chivian (2001) entitled Environment and health:â Species misfortune and biological system disturbance †the suggestions for human health,â worldwide environmental change, stratospheric ozone consumption, and the negative consequences of other man-caused exercises to compromise biodiversity, yet it is the corruption, decrease and discontinuity of living spaces that is the best danger.  â â â â â â â â â â According to an exceptionally broad investigation made by Andrew Derocher, Nicholas Lunn and Ian Stirling (2004) entitled Polar Bears in a Warming Climate, factors, for example, the diminishing region of Arctic Sea Ice, reduced multiyear ice, timing of ice development or separation, denning, developments of the bears on the ocean ice, amount of prey, human-polar bear connections and contamination all join to undermine the endurance of the species. Cold Sea Iceâ â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â  â â â â â â â â â â According to the IUCN/Species Survival Commission Polar Bear Specialist Group (2002, pp. 21-35), polar bears have had the option to possess ocean ice natural surroundings all through the Arctic with its populace evaluated at 21,500 to 25,000. Cold Sea Ice are utilized by polar bears to move themselves over the water to go after seals.â Lessening the quantity of ice would incredibly influence the food asset of the species. Reduced Multiyear Iceâ â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â â  â â â â â â â â â â According to a past report by Comiso (2002b refered to in Derocher, 2004) the ice spread in the Arctic is now declining at the pace of 9% at regular intervals; which implies that the ice might be totally gone in only one hundred years. Since polar bears are completely subject to their frigid natural surroundings, losing the ice can prompt their elimination. Timing of Ice Formation and its Break Up  â â â â â â â â â â One of the fundamental things that will be influenced by an Earth-wide temperature boost would be the pattern of separation and freezing of the yearly ice in the arctic.â Some researchers accept that a dangerous atmospheric devation influences the cycle by making the ice separate prior every year while deferring its freeze. In Canada’s Western Hudson Bay, the yearly ice separation is seen to happen about 2.5 weeks sooner than 3 decades back. (Stirling, et.al. refered to in Derocher, 2004) This is significant in light of the fact that when the ice breaks sooner, the polar bears have abbreviated chance to benefit from seals which can extraordinarily influence the states of their bodies all through the year.â Their bodies would not have had the option to get enough of the fat they would requirement for their four-month quick.  â â â â â â â â â â According to different examinations recently done by Derocher and Stirling (1995b refered to in Derocher, 2004), grown-up polar bears lose around .85 to .90 kilograms of weight day by day during fasts.â With the unexpected breaking of ice that would end taking care of period prior and the postponed freezing, polar bears will lose their weight strangely because of the more extended time they have to quick. Despite the fact that it might appear to be paltry, this significantly affects the pregnant polar bears.â If these female pregnant polar bears fall past 189 kilograms of weight because of the long fasting time frame, odds of conveying the offspring become nil. Denning  â â â â â â â â â â Female polar bears have most loved spots to cave. To arrive at these spots, the ice cycles ought to be customary to have the option to enable these bears to arrive at their goals on schedule. Likewise, with the ice dissolving and making the zone farther to swim to, it is getting hard for polar bears to arrive at their preferred areas.  â â â â â â â â â â There are some subspecies that do may not be specific with their cave areas since they can nook on floating multiyear ice.â These polar bears are as of now ready to raise the offspring well.â However, with a worldwide temperature alteration influencing the multiyear ice, these bears may must be on the drifting ice longer than should be expected which implies more vitality wasted.â This can likewise be inconvenient to the fledglings which are not yet completely created and prepared to climate the fatigued conditions. On the off chance that this occurs, at that point a worldwide temperature alteration will influence the populace in view of the fledglings that can be lost because of the conditions referenced.  â â â â â â â â â â For polar bear populaces that want to return to their maternity nooks, another difficult that could compromise their characteristic action would be that while the planet warms, the verdure in the region would likewise be drier making these inclined to fire.â Warmer sanctums with fire-dangers are not reasonable for pregnant polar bears and their offspring. Developments of Polar Bears on the Sea Ice  â â â â â â â â â â Because of hotter ocean temperatures and an expansion in ocean twists because of an unnatural weather change, ocean ice will thin effectively and this may make this significant transportation for polar bears become flimsy or float quicker. On the off chance that it moves a lot quicker, the species would need to burn through more effort in arriving at their favored areas. Albeit polar bears love to swim, utilizing an excess of vitality can likewise cause unforeseen weakness and generation for the polar bears. Perceptions likewise note that polar bears move to land when ocean ice amount goes underneath half of its typical number. This could be on the grounds that more vitality is spent proceeding onward top of floating ice contrasted with strolling on strong cold ground. A diminishing in the quantity of ocean ice floating likewise reduces the chances to chase for more prey. Accessibility of Prey  â â â â â â â â â â A reduction in ocean ice has its impacts on the efficiency of seals, which are the primary food of polar bears.â Seals depend on ocean ice for their maternity exercises, decreasing the amount of ocean ice floating because of a dangerous atmospheric devation will likewise diminish the number of inhabitants in seals.  â â â â â â â â â â There were perceptions in 1979 that hotter temperatures and downpour came about to the simple revealing of seal little guy dens that made it threefold simpler for polar bears to get them. (Hammil and Smith, 1991 refered to in Derocher, 2004) If this can turn into a pattern wherein in hotter temperatures will cause the previous beginning of downpour which will

Descartes - Meditations Essay - 1649 Words

In the Meditations, Rene Descartes attempts to doubt everything that is possible to doubt. His uncertainty of things that existence ranges from God to himself. Then he goes on to start proving that things do exist by first proving that he exists. After he establishes himself he can go on to establish everything else in the world. Next he goes to prove that the mind is separate then the body. In order to do this he must first prove he has a mind, and then prove that bodily things exist. He goes on to say that it is possible that all knowledge of external objects, including his body, could be false as the result of the actions of an evil demon. It is not, however, possible that he could be deceived about his existence or his nature as a thinking thing. This is true because if he can be deceived about anything, then he can be certain, as he is a thinking thing. Even corporeal objects, such as his body, are known much more distinctly through the mind than through the body. nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp;nbsp; This is where the wax argument comes into play. All the properties of the piece of wax that we perceive with the senses change as the wax melts. This is true as well of its primary properties, such as shape, extension and size. Yet the wax remains the same piece of wax as it melts. We know the wax through our mind and judgement, not through our senses or imagination. Business Communication Issue

Question: Discuss about the Business Communication Issue. Answer: Introduction: Business communication is constituted with three major aspects that include verbal communication, written communication and electronic business communication. In this specific study verbal communication has been chosen as the selected business communication issue. By using Berlos SMCR Communication Model the study has focused to highlight on how messages are transmitted from a proper source to the receiver with the help of various verbal communication tools. One of the most significant positive aspects of verbal communication is that both the sender and the receiver can get immediate feedback from each other. Business communication issue: Various types of verbal communications include speech, video, telephonic, conversation through dialogue and so on. If an individual fails to maintain effective verbal communication by using these tools, the communication process becomes a major issue. Speech: In order to maintain an effective verbal business communication, speech is the most important aspect that enables both the sender and receiver to understand each others point of views (Bovee, Courtland, 2012). As per Berlos SMCR Communication Model, communication skill is highly important to transmit the message to the mind of receiver. Berlos SMCR Communication Model implies that the speech of an individual would be effective only when the receiver can understand the message proper and give the sender and immediate as well as proper feedback. As per the communication model of Berlo, it can be analyzed that an individual person by using a proper source transmits the message through a proper channel to the receiver. In this specific case, speech is the source that can be transmitted to the receiver with the help of specific channel (Guffey Loewy, 2012). Here, the capability of hearing and observing the speech can be considered as the proper channel. If the receiver can understand the message, it will reflect on the attitude of that particular individual. Video and demonstration: Video and demonstration is one of the most recognizable ways of verbal business communication. With the help of visual aid the speaker can draw the attention of people constantly. The receiver on the other hand, does not feel monotony with the visual effect. Berlos SMCR Communication Model implies that without having a fluent skill of demonstration the sender would not be able to transmit the message to the proper destination effectively. With the rapid progress of video the speaker should have the capability to describe the entire slide simultaneously (Ma et al., 2013). Otherwise, the viewers would not be able to relate the message with video clips. In this kind of situation, Berlos SMCR Communication Model plays a major role. By using this particular model, the sender should use the proper source by improving body language and communication skill for the demonstration of visual aids. The video content can be considered as the message that can be transmitted to the receiver through power of observation to the receiver (Uysal Heidarpour, 2012). If the receiver can observed that video and relate the visual clips and demonstration with video contents, the attitudes of receiver can provide a positive vive. As a result, internal communication in between the encoder and decoder would be effective automatically. Telephonic conversation: The method of telephonic conversation is different from video or dialogues. In this particular mode of verbal communication, the sender and receiver cannot view each other while maintaining conversation (Baldwin, Bommer Rubin, 2012). Therefore, the entire process of communication method can become a serious issue if the encoder and the decoder fail to clarify their message properly. Berlos SMCR Communication Model is very much effective in this specific case. Communication skill of the sender is the primary source. Based on the communication skill the person can transmit the message to the receiver by hearing properly (Bull Brown, 2012). If the receiver fails to hear the message of sender the entire process of business communication would become a major issue. In telephonic conversation the receiver would not be able to show their feedback through attitude or facial expression. Therefore, voice is the only tool with the help of which the sender would get to know whether the entire conversation has become effective or not (Conrad Newberry, 2012). At the same time, as per Berlos SMCR Communication Model, the receiver cannot use observation as their medium of channel of transmitting message. The receiver can provide necessary feedback by hearing and feeling the tone of voice. Conversation through dialogue: Dialogue is the only way of verbal business communication with the help of which both the sender and receiver can give equal participation for making the process of communication successful. This particular method enables the two communicators to make face-to-face conversation (Keyton et al., 2013). As a result, both the sender and the receiver can provide immediate feedback to each other. This kind of communication method is most suitable for most of the business organizations where employees and the employers can make interpersonal communication. Berlos SMCR Communication Model implies that communication skill, attitude and body language of an individual are the primary sources this type of verbal communication. In order to transmit the message to the receiver the sender tends to use observation as the major tool. If the receiver fails to observe and hear the message of that individual the entire process of business communication would be failed (Lutgen-Sandvik Tracy, 2012). If the receiver tends to provide an immediate response to the encoder, the process of business communication would not create any issue. Similarly, if the senders fail to communicate properly and to convince the receiver the entire process of business communication would fail (Basil et al., 2013). Therefore, dialogue making is one of the most suitable ways to maintain verbal communication with each other. Conclusion: Issues related to business communication are the major concern of this specific study. In order to communicate with two or more than two individual Berlos SMCR Communication Model is very significant. Among the three modes of business communication process the importance of verbal communication is most prominent. Verbal communication enables the participants to maintain direct conversation with each other. In this specific study, various classifications of verbal communication such as speech, dialogues, telephonic have been depicted. At the same time, the contribution of Berlos SMCR Communication Model while maintaining verbal communication has been portrayed in the specific study. References Baldwin, T. T., Bommer, W. What is Judaism according to Heschel Essay Example Essay Example

What is Judaism according to Heschel Essay Example Paper What is Judaism according to Heschel Essay Introduction According to Rabbi Heschel Judaism was that whenever somebody mentioned the name Judaism, it was like taking about either somebody citing a poem, God the father or someone who lived a spiritual life. Since many people believed that without God everything is impossible, Heschel tried to come out clearly that people need to be strong in faith despite all the difficulties they are going through. He also stressed out that everyone should be able to live peacefully with each other by forgiving one another whenever there is a problem between them. (Merkel, 1985, p.2) (Heschel, 1985).The word of God was for everyone no matter what they do, where they come from or whatever language they speak. One way of making people understands the word of God was to write and come out clearly about religious teachings. They were also being taught how to live in harmony and how to confess to one another whenever there is a problem among them. (Merkel, 1985, p. 3) (Heschel, 1985).According to Heschel, Torah ’s ways of giving out ideas or explanations about Judaism was like a reflection of what has been happening in our daily lives as it was written in the bible. God the Father also appears as a very bright light to show people that they should believe and have faith in Him all the time. (Merkel, 1985, p. 4) (Heschel, 1985).Heschel join one of the spiritual congregations where he became more spiritual and strong in faith. This attracted very many people as it was a good example of a Jesus follower. It also made many people to listen, understand and believe in the word of God. (Merkel, 1985, p. 5) (Heschel, 1985).Rabbi was so much into Christianity that he could not have time to come together with other people in his congregation. This made the people of his congregation to say that he was over doing the work of Christianity. He also tried to make people have peace, love, and unity and go as far celebrating mass as a sign of commitment to God. . (Merkel, 1985, p. 6) (Heschel, 1985 ).Everyone was to understand the word of God in the right way and apply in their daily life. This was made to encourage the weak people who were not strong in faith to be able to participate in duties that strengthen their faith. The difficulties that the people of Israel experience on Mount Sinai were a big challenge for them in their life. This is because from there is when man had really believed that God do exist. (Merkel, 1985, p. 7) (Heschel, 1985).He brought the image of God as he appears to Moses on Mount Sinai. This is when Moses’ people had no faith in God and started worshipping other gods. God became angry and appeared to Moses and gave him the Ten Commandments that could guide and make his people believe and trust in God. The Ten Commandments were written so that everyone should believe that all the writings were truly from Jesus but not Moses. (Merkel, 1985, p. 8) (Heschel, 1985).Moses is also portrayed as good leader because he is seen leading his people from I srael to Misery as per instructions given by God. This is when God appeared to him as burning bush when he was looking after the cattle. By then they had no commandments to follow but they still believed in God as their creator and source of inspiration in their life. (Merkel, 1985, p. 9) (Heschel, 1985).As it is seen in the bible that by the time God gave Moses the Ten Commandments, his people had already lost their faith and started worshipping other gods. This made it very difficult for Moses to make all of them believe in the Ten Commandments given the God. It implies that not all Moses’ people accepted the Ten Commandments. That, s why there are always new laws every generation. (Merkel, 1985, p. 10) (Heschel, 1985).Though there were some people who disagreed with Moses as he gave them the Ten Commandments, majority believed on the Ten Commandments that made many generations that comes after them to accept and follow the Ten Commandments as it was meant to strengthen peo ple’s faith in their daily life. (Merkel, 1985, p. 11) (Heschel, 1985).People should be in a position to understand and believe in Jesus’ signs as it was written in the bible. They need to accept that even though they can’t see some of these things happening now, they had already happened before and their fore fathers believed in them. So it’s a big challenge to them to accept the reality of the past. (Merkel, 1985, p. 12) (Heschel, 1985).As it is written in the bible that when Jesus went to Cana and wine got finished during the wedding, He asked for water and turned it into wine for the people who were in the wedding. And also when there was a lot of wind when he was with James and John in a boat, He stopped the wind. These two signs show that God is always there for his people and He will always present in them wherever they go. (Merkel, 1985, p. 13) (Heschel, 1985).It is good to believe in what you understand best than to believe in what you donâ€℠¢t know. This only comes out when you really accept, believe and have faith in the scriptures of the bible. You should be able to relate the scriptures of the bible into your daily life and try to practice them in your life because this is only way to strengthened your faith. (Merkel, 1985, p. 14) (Heschel, 1985).Moses was one of the most prominent leaders that God used to show people the right way of life that will remain a remembrance in life to everyone. These are written in the bible so that everyone can understand whatever happened in the past during the reign of their fore fathers. (Merkel, 1985, p. 15) (Heschel, 1985).It is also important to preach or translate the scriptures of the bible according what was written rather than preaching the things which do not exist to people. This is because whatever is being taught now will remain as a history for the coming generations. They should understand that the scriptures of the bible are holy words from God the father but just a no rmal human being. (Merkel, 1985, p. 16) (Heschel, 1985).God communicated to his people through the scriptures by sending prophets to perform various signs. This can be seen as he ordered Abraham to sacrifice his only son, appearing to Moses as burning bush, saving his disciple from drowning during the strong wind and raising Larus from death after four days. All these events remain as a history to every generation that comes and it will always be there to guide them in their life. (Merkel, 1985, p. 17) (Heschel, 1985).The covenant between God and Moses on Mount Sinai was a sign of an agreement between the people of Israel and God. It made easier for the people of Israel to communicate to God and adored Him as their only savior. So for the people of Israel to communicate to God they had to understand the scripture, translate it and relate to their daily life. (Merkel, 1985, p. 18) (Heschel, 1985).The covenant made on Mount Sinai lead to various activities to be performed by man. This is where man had to obey the holy Sunday, do not kill, do not steal, obey their parents so that you can live longer, believe in God all the time and always standing firm to tell truth. Even the people of Israel went as far as fasting in order to strengthen their faith which remained as history to all the coming generations. (Merkel, 1985, p. 19) (Heschel, 1985).When Moses received the Ten Commandments on Mount Sinai, it does not mean it was the end of everything that God had to give his people. It implies that the door was still open for more teachings in the future. This encourages people to believe and trust in God as their only comforter during the trial moments in their lives. (Merkel, 1985, p. 20) (Heschel, 1985).The bible was not written as book to be read but as scripture to guide people in their lives. It was supposed to be read, understand the meaning of the scriptures and translate and then preach the right words of God to the people. This would inspire many people to rea d the scriptures of the bible and know the reason why Jesus sacrificed to suffer on their behalf. (Merkel, 1985, p. 21) (Heschel, 1985).As seen that it is very easier for the people to live as God’s people when they both understand the bible very well. Therefore it is good to make people believe in Jesus as their only guidance in life. When you follow the right path that is God’s foot steps, you will find life interesting and encouraging no matter what difficulties you may be going through. It also makes man become a strong Christian which remains as an example to his forth coming generations. (Merkel, 1985, p. 22) (Heschel, 1985).Jesus loves the world so much that he bled and died for the human kind. So it is the work of the man to be able to follow God’s commandments in order to fulfill God’s promises. It does mean that God made it so difficult for the man not to enjoy life but to have good life both in the world and in heaven. That is why Jesus forbids man not to do some of the things in life. It is not a punishment but a lesson to prepare them for both life in the world and the kingdom of God. (Merkel, 1985, p. 23) (Heschel, 1985).Everyone should be able to carry his own cross when it comes to serving God because you will be judged according your own deeds but not on the behalf of someone else. Man must be able to know the scriptures of the bible so that it can able to apply it any time in his or her life. This will also help people to have time worship God because everyone is a position to read and interpret whatever information which is in the bible. (Merkel, 1985, p. 24) (Heschel, 1985).Conclusion:Judaism is all about the past events that happened during the reign of the prophets like Moses, Elijah and Abraham. These are the days when God used to communicate to man through prophets. The prophets could see God in visions, signs and symbols then go and communicate to the people according what they have seen in their visions or symbols they had received. They had to explain all the details of what God told them. So that is how man communicated to god in older days.Reference:Heschel, A. J. (1965). Roberto Clemente essays

Roberto Clemente essays There are no heroes, there are men who achieve deeds of heroic dimension (43). Those words that Gallico said describe what a hero for me is. To achieve deeds of heroic dimension a person need to have qualities of heroic dimension such as self sacrifice, perseverance, and going beyond the normal. Roberto Clemente Walker is the hero that I picked. Clemente was born in Barrio San Anton in Carolina, Puerto Rico in August 18, 1934. He was an African-American Puerto Rican who suffered prejudice but overcame it successfully. He had a very difficult life but he still prevailed as an extraordinary baseball player and as a person. Clemente is a hero with the heroes qualities of self sacrifice, perseverance, and going beyond the One of the most important qualities of a hero is self sacrifice and fortunately my hero has it. Clementes self sacrifice when helping others was outstanding. He even died trying to help others because of an earthquake in Nicaragua in 1972. Clemente decided to go and take them medical supplies, clothing and food even though the weather was extremely bad. His airplane crashed just after take off and Clemente and all the passengers died. Another example of Clementes self sacrifice involves his carrer. No one gets to his level without hard work, and Clemente was not an exception. He practiced so he could be the. He said I want to be remembered as a player who gave all he had to give (4). Another important quality of a hero is perseverance and Clemente had a lot of it.Clemente was an African-American Puerto Rican trying to reach the major leagues. At the time he played, there was a lot of prejudice against African-Americans and even more against Puerto Ricans. Despite that prejudice, Clement ignored all people critics and reach the highest level a ...

Case Study based assessment - Essay Example The combined impact of recession and intensified competition as a result of European de-regulation led to important shifts in business strategy with contrasting implications for its staff, an approach that has, with some modifications, continued until the present day. BA has realized that the competition in the airline industry is growing as the globalization and privatization policies have opened the limits of sky widely and international air carriers started to intrude into the territories of BA. As a result of that, BA decided to adopt the merger policies to strengthen their business prospects. In November 2009, BA reached an agreement with Iberia and both the companies decided to merge together to form a single company. The merger between BA and Iberia resulted in the creation of world’s third-largest airline in terms of annual revenue. The merger was confirmed in April 2010 and it is expected that it will take effect from the end of this year. â€Å"Iberia Airlines appoi nts its chairman, Antonio Vazquez Romero as the new chairman of International Airlines Group (IAG), the new company formed under the merger agreement between Iberia and British Airways (Goldstone, 2010) ‘Employee relations’ in BA is a much debated topic in UK now. Many people believe that BA could have improved their relations with the employees and sustain its identity as a national icon, even amidst stiff competition. Many contextual factors affected the employee relations in BA. Moreover, the employee relations in BA have made lot of impacts in the UK employment sector also. This paper critically analyses the above aspect with the help of the case study provided about British Airways. If employee relations is understood as an arena in which the contest between the pursuit of a market society and the defence of the principles of moral economy is played out, then it is impossible to separate market from nonmarket relations, economy

The public duty on gender equality in GLA makes required arrangements with regard to the principle that there should be equality for all. Its strategy for equality for women attempts that the organisation reflects the entire local community at all strata. The mainstreaming of gender equality has been found to be considerably easier in a newly created public body with equalities as a dimension of officer responsibilities. Create atmospher Essay Example for Free

Create atmospher Essay The writer creates a tense, aggressive and misleading atmosphere. Miller creates a tense atmosphere as Eddie is attacking Rodolfo with sneery comments to lower his self esteem and make Rodolfo look bad in Catherines eyes. The quote thats why the water front is no place for him (Rodolfo) Eddie is making Rodolfo feel unwanted and like this place is no place for you. Also this could imply that Catherine also no place for him and he needs to back off. In the stage direction Miller make the atmosphere tense by I quote (has has been unconsciously twisting the newspaper into a tight role) and everyone is looking at him and acknowledging him knowing how much Rodolfo annoys him. Then miller writes in the stage direction about the paper suddenly tears in two this doesnt only show eddies frustration and strength but also could symbolise Eddie and Catherines relationship, it shows if Eddie keeps on pushing her and twisting their relationship and eventually it will break and Catherine will have to make a decision and that is exactly what happens later on in the play when Catherine has to chose between staying with Eddie or going with Rodolfo and she finally feels she needs to stand up for herself and grow up so goes with Rodolfo. Eddie then moves on to how Marco and him should go see a fight together, and constantly addressing Marco showing he feels Marco as the only person who can put Rodolfo down a peg or two, he loves the dominance over Rodolfo so then takes advantage of this by always asking for Marcos approval on matters on how Rodolfo has done bad, like when Catherine and Rodolfo were out late at the pictures and Eddie states about how Rodolfo might get picked up if hes out that late and how he dragged Catherine off and shouldnt be out so late with her. Marco asks Eddie what has he done and Eddie tells him about being late In and Marco say to Rodolfo you come home early now Eddie loves how Marco can embarrass and be dominant over Rodolfo. When Eddie is talking about fighting Marco is uneasy because he can see that its not a good idea, but Eddie is making the atmosphere so misleading he is being nice and saying things like you want to come and I treat you and he says Ill buy the tickets at this point the reader is not sure of what is going to happen but we have this thought at the back of our head that its not a good idea and foreshadowing danger. Then the atmosphere turns violent and tense, it starts out Eddie saying about how he could teach Marco how to box, then he turns to Rodolfo and then states well come on, Ill teach you instantly this seems an innocent gesture from anyone else but not Eddie, he knows what he is doing and just wants to get back at Rodolfo. He is saying Ill show you a couple a passes these are all excuses he just wants a chance to inflict pain on Rodolfo. Boxing is another manly sport that feminine Rodolfo cant do, and Eddie knows this so takes advantage of this weakness knowing he wont be able to defend himself so expects Rodolfo to be weak. It then turns out that Rodolfo is very good and both Eddie and Marco are praising him so this all seems like a bit of fun but then Eddie is egging him on to do worse and saying dont pity on methrow it we then get this superstition that its not going to turn out well. Eddie then states you cant hurt me but we know this is not true because Rodolfo has already hurt him but through Catherine instead, Eddie knows this and takes advantage of this all the time making the atmosphere tense and aggressive, Eddie knows he has sort of lost Catherine to Rodolfo and is determined not to lose to Rodolfo at something Eddie is good at. Catherine then becomes scared and is the only one sensing trouble so asks what are they doin? and Beatrice doesnt think anything of it and is happy they are finally getting on and cant see the trouble behind it. Eddie seems fine and happy then all of a sudden fakes a punch and lands his right on Rodolfo, Rodolfo staggers. Marco then rises this shows that Marco is not afraid to stand up for his family and is kind of warning to Eddie. Then Catherine rushes to Rodolfo this will seriously anger Eddie as it seems Catherine has already made the decision to go with Rodolfo instead. Eddie senses Catherine is angry with him so instantly comments on how Rodolfo is fine and saying did I hurt you kid? he is trying to keep the atmosphere neutral and not get on the bad side of Catherine. Beatrice then puts and end to it and says thats enough to Eddie. He then says to Marco Ill teach him again and in the stage directions It states Marco nods dubiously this shows that Marco weary of this. Eddie is made out to be a bully and Rodolfo seems even better in the eyes of Catherine for being so good at boxing and not fighting back to Eddies punch. After the boxing the atmosphere becomes tense again Rodolfo puts on the record paper doll and we know that this record has created quite a tense atmosphere in the past because the lyrics symbolises the love triangle between Eddie, Catherine and Rodolfo. The lyrics state about how Catherine is Rodolfos girl and not Eddies anymore and Its tough to love a doll thats not your own and thats how Eddie feels. We know that this was not a good idea for Rodolfo to do then he asks Catherine to dance. Marco can see that Eddie is uncomfortable with this, so Marco sets him a challenge he places a chair in front of him and asks him to lift the chair by one leg and with one arm behind your back, Marco only demonstrates this though, this may imply that Marco wants to be the dominant one and show Eddie how its done after Eddies pathetic attempt to do it, Eddie then proceeds to accept the challenge it. Eddie cant do it and never faults himself and how its because the chair is on an angle not because he isnt strong enough. This could also symbolise about how Eddie feels his judgments are right about Rodolfo and now Marco needs to show Eddie some dominance and prove Eddie is wrong. Marco then raises the chair exactly how he showed Eddie and he carries on hiring the chair all the way above his head and holding it there. The stage directions state Marco gives of a glare of warning to Eddie all the while still holding the chair over his head, he is stating to Eddie to back off and leave Rodolfo alone before he does something his regrets. His glare then turns into a smile of triumph this shows that he has dominance over Eddie and control. Marco ends the scene as the most powerful man. All the while the atmosphere has a constant theme of tension and aggressiveness. In this extract there is pathos which means you feel sympathy for a someone and this particular person is Eddie. He never seems to get what he wants and has been seen as a bully and not a nice person in everyones eyes. We feel pity for him as Catherine has shown she has chosen Rodolfo over Eddie and now Eddie seems powerless and not the man of the house when Marco shows his act of dominance.

Come Shouting to Zion and the development of African-American Religious Culture :: Religion Shouting Zion Essays

Come Shouting to Zion and the development of African-American Religious Culture Missing Works Cited In detailing the long process by which African-Americans came to embrace Protestant Christianity and shape their own unique form of it, Frey and Wood emphasize African agency throughout. Their case is better supported by evidence in the 19th century than in the 18th, during which time Christianity had little effect on slave society through the efforts of Anglicans, not so much because Africans rejected the gospel as because whites withheld Christian brotherhood from blacks. As blacks in the American South and in the British Caribbean struggled to develop individual and collective identities from the persistent remnants of African culture and their new conditions of life, the series of efforts by evangelicals to convert slaves eventually gave rise to a distinct African-American form of Christian theology, worship style, and religious community. The importance of religion among African Americans, as among all people, rests on fulfilling the human need for an understanding of one’s place in both the spiritual and temporal world. While it is difficult, as Frey and Wood concede, to know with certainty what lay behind Africans’ confessions of conversion to Christianity, we can understand how religion played a critical role in defining social relationships among slaves and between blacks and whites. Frey and Wood explain the appeal and success of Evangelicalism among slaves when they assert, â€Å"Deprived of their traditional supernatural means of dealing with recurrent life crises, [African-Americans] discovered in evangelical conversion requirements an opportunity to reassert personal authority based on their ability to communicate directly with God and to bring others to recognize the need for personal repentance and acceptance of Jesus† (109). One early example that supports this link between religiou s involvement and a sense of personal identity, if not between conversion and increasing social prestige or power, is found in a slave woman who tells Moravian missionaries that her people have come from across the sea and lost their father and mother, and therefore want to know the Moravians’ Father above. The displacement of Africans, for whom locality was critical to interactions with the spiritual world, did not deprive them of their religious cosmologies, but required them to learn the spiritual landscape of their new home and reshape their practices accordingly. Come Shouting to Zion details the many religious rituals that Africans preserved in the new world, especially those surrounding fundamental life events such as the birth and naming of children, marriage, burial ceremonies, and ritual dancing and singing to communicate with ancestors and deities.

Understanding and Applying Adult Development Theory

Understanding and Applying Adult Development Theory 1 Understanding and Applying Adult Development Theory John Smith Nyack College Life is so busy these days that sometimes we don’t stop to think how we got to this point or realize some of those key factors that played a role. I think it is fair to say that most people take a lot of things for granted but when you pause and analyze life’s events it can be an eye opener and really get you thinking about how certain career decisions have created a pathway for your career and at life-space. Gets a little scary when you think back on how one or two decisions could have really swayed your career. I think we can all think back to an event in our adult development that either went our way or one that didn’t that. I think back to my first few years as a working adult and how some of those early influences really set me on a path forward I spent a good amount of time reviewing Donald Super’s theory of career development and the life-span/life-space theory. I am naturally a skeptic, especially when it comes to most of these types of theory’s I read about but I feel that Super was Understanding and Applying Adult Development Theory 2 right on and it is hard to find areas of disagreement. I especially agree with the point that career decisions are not isolated from other aspects of our lives. When you talk about career development it starts off as a very broad subject and people take all kind of different paths to develop their careers. In my case I started working at UPS right out of high school and it was just a â€Å"job† at first and that is all I expected. The word â€Å"career† never entered my thinking, alls I knew is that I had graduated high school and my Mother old me that I had to get a job so off to UPS I went. That decision was the first major influence in my adult life, what I didn’t realize back then was that going to UPS instead of, let’s say getting a job at a small business was a huge factor in my career development. UPS is obviously a very big company and they tend to hold onto the one’s they want to develop which was very important to me. If I decided to work for a small family owned business as my first job things could have been very different. I am always very thankful for that decision I made and the people at UPS who took me under their wing and helped develop my career at UPS. A major factor in one’s career development is to put themselves in a position to grow and or be surrounded by good people or good companies that will help you grow. Easier said then done, when you are young sometimes you don’t realize or are not looking into the future but for me that a critical decision which started my career. My first couple of years with UPS I was still just a kid, but by the time I turned 20 Understanding and Applying Adult Development Theory 3 I was what they called a part-time supervisor which was another critical decision/influences in my career. I can remember back to that day when I almost turned down the job because I had long hair and didn’t want to cut it off. UPS had a, no hair past you collar rule for men and I really almost turned down the position because of this. Once got past the long hair issue things really started taking off the next few years as I moved around in different management roles to build my skill set. The most influential director I ever worked for was a lady by the name of Mary Finnigan, I still remember her name, she use to hound me all the time about school and when am going to enroll in college. That is what I mean by good people around you, good companies have good people and they will give you that extra push when you need one. Not sure I ever would have gone to college if she wasn’t all over me about it all the time. Again, she was looking at the big picture regarding developing my career and I was still just looking at it as a job. All of this was happening during Super’s Exploration stage of career development. I was trying to understand what I wanted to do as far as a career. I was part of the union for year which I did not like very much, I was part of management for about four years during this period and really enjoyed the challenges of the job but still had a hard time with the style of management and people telling me what to do all the time, looking over my shoulder all the time, and just the overall â€Å"The beatens will Understanding and Applying Adult Development Theory 4 continue until morale improves† management style. UPS use to have something called MBO’s which was â€Å"management by objectives† but the joke was that it was really MBI, â€Å"management by intimidation†. As I moved toward the end of my exploration stage I realized I had to make a career decision/change. Although I very much enjoyed the high pressure atmosphere and the thrill of success I knew that I didn’t respond well to that sort of management style as it was very draining for me and started having a negative effect. As I moved into the establishment phase of Super’s theory I made a bold move and agreed to start college as per Mary’s request. Once I finished my second semester UPS granted my approval to move from the operations to sales which was huge for me and where I excelled. For the first time I started thinking of UPS Sales as a career and not just a job. I also got married, bought a house, and had a child in the first few years of this stage. As my career in sales got going it create a lot of stability in my live, somehow in operations you never had the feeling of security do to the management style but now I did. Career and personal lives are very much integrated together, the feeling of a career and not just a job somehow settles you down and you start looking at live in a different perspective. Although I owe a lot to UPS and people like Mary I made the decision to leave UPS and to join FedEx. That was the hardest but most important career decision I have ever made. With UPS I had 10 years in, I was doing well, had security, things were going well. I Understanding and Applying Adult Development Theory 5 I also had a lot of responsibilities including a mortgage and family. Making career changes not only affected me but all affected my family and it was scary leaving something you knew was there for something unknown. But it all worked out very well, FedEx is a much younger company, a sales driven company, which fits my style better. I have not entered the maintenance stage yet and won’t for another 5 years but if I had to disagree with any of Super’s five stages this would be one that I would disagree with somewhat. If your goal is to just holding onto an achieved job I think you are going to fail in today’s world. The world is very different today and if you are past 45 in corporate America sitting still and just holding onto a job that means you are going backwards. Maybe when you hit 60 I could understand that thinking but not in your mid-40’s or 50’s. Corporations are very aggressive these days and wouldn’t allow someone to just to hold onto an achieved job. Maybe this is where a smaller company would think or act differently then a large corporation who has to answer to shareholders each quarter. There are many different roads people travel, for the last twenty years mine has been in corporate America working for Fortune 500 companies, I expect that I would continue down this road hopefully with FedEx. For me personally, I would belief that I will not settle into a holding pattern once I enter my mid-forties. I still feel very young in my career and am still learning new things everyday and I think that will continue for some time to come. With my position there are always larger corporations to sell to or manage Understanding and Applying Adult Development Theory 6 and as I continue to move my career forward I will work with larger and more complex corporations which will keep me moving forward and not settling. Evaluation of the Claim that Conscience is a Realiable...

Evaluation of the Claim that Conscience is a Realiable Guide in Ethical Decision Making In order to decide whether or not our consciences can be relied upon, we must first examine what we mean by conscience. In order for conscience to be consistently and absolutely reliable, infallible, it must stem from an infallible source - God. Alternatively, conscience might have a potential of ultimate reliability, if the faculty of conscience was dynamic and capable of solving problems i.e. if it was an innate part of human nature. Conscience could even be totally fallible - an arbitrary by-product of experience and biology. This idea - propagated by such scientist-thinkers as Sigmund Freud and†¦show more content†¦The implication of this is that the law of conscience is not routed in any kind of rational or logical idioms, or any external reality, but rather the fear of castration, or the insecurity which women (supposedly) experience as they have been deprived of the phallus. For Freud, the conscience, or Super-Ego, was an irrational, undynamic and emotional force, of as much consequence as the Id in matters of gravity. The conscience in this case points towards ones responsibilities to ones parents, not to God or any exterior moral laws. Freud, in answer to this essay question, would say that the conscience is completely unreliable, unless you simply wish to rely on it as a barometer of social acceptability. If your view of ethics is restricted to what is inoffensive to people at large, and your parents in particular, then yes, the Super-Ego is a reliable agent of ethical decision-making. But if you wish to consult your super-ego on an issue which your parents never ad an opinion on - be it birth control, capital punishment or forgiveness - then you will find your Super-Ego of little use. Piaget, although often hailed as a pre-eminent child psychologist, and required reading for all trainee teachers, was in fact and epistemologist. He believed that we
